The Power of Belief

The Power of Belief

When Bernard Guchu came to the United States from Kenya, he carried with him the values his parents instilled in him early in life — faith, perseverance and the importance of education. He dreamed of
earning his degree and building a better future for his family.

After years of working and waiting, that dream began to take shape when he and his wife, Rahab, discovered Donnelly College. Rahab attended Donnelly first, earning her practical nursing
certificate. She then encouraged Bernard to follow his own dream. Bernard is studying in the Licensed Practical Nursing program, balancing classes, work, and family life with Rahab and their young son, Samuel.

“I’m so grateful for my experience at Donnelly. I’ve learned a lot, made friends, and received great support from teachers,” said Bernard. “Donnelly’s scholarships relieve a lot of stress — $500 or $700 might not sound like much, but it allows me to focus on school instead of worrying about bills. Knowing someone believes in me makes all the difference.”

Belief is at the heart of Donnelly’s mission. We believe in the potential of every student that walks
through our doors. And your belief in our mission makes it possible for students like Bernard to thrive.
If you haven’t made a gift to Donnelly this year, please consider a year-end gift to ensure that Donnelly
remains a place where belief and opportunity meet. Bernard’s goal is to graduate and get a nursing job
so he can provide for his family. He also aims to give back someday “to help other students pay for
school and move forward in life.”

“Donnelly was founded by people led by God,” Bernard added. “I’m so grateful for everyone
who supports students like me.”
