FAQS

  • What costs am I responsible for?

KCKPS covers all tuition, books and lunch every day. You are responsible for transportation and the following basic supplies:
- Notebooks/paper
- Calculator
- Pens/pencils
- Bookbag/backpack
- Flash drive

  • When does school begin and end for the year?

Gateway to College (GtC) follows Donnelly College’s academic calendar, not that of KCKPS.

For the 2016-17 academic year, fall semester begins August 22 and ends December 14. Spring semester begins January 17 and ends May 10.

All holidays are according to Donnelly’s calendar. Any weather delays and cancellation notices must be from Donnelly College. You may sign up to receive text messages about any delays and cancellations.

  • Are there sports, organizations and/or other activities available?

Donnelly College has intramural teams and other campus organizations. In order to participate, you must be passing all your classes with a B or higher.

  • When will I graduate?

Each student enters the program with a different number of credits needed, which determines their time in the program. You will meet with your Resource Specialist throughout the semester to determine how many credits you need and your anticipated graduation date. Keep in mind that in order to move forward, you must pass all your classes with a C or higher. However, during your Foundation semester, you must pass Reading and Writing with a B or higher.

  • What happens if I am not passing one of my classes?

You must meet with your Resource Specialist prior to the deadline to withdraw from a class. Each decision is made on a case-by-case basis. All Foundation classes are required and may not be withdrawn from unless the students steps out completely. If a class is dropped, it must be retaken at a later date.

  • Can I leave for lunch, in between classes or during lab?

No. KCKPS requires students be on campus from 8:15 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students' attendance and seat time must be documented for the District to pay their tuition.

  • How many absences are allowed?

Due to the rigor and pace of the program, we advise students to take no more than three absences for any class. In addition, the District policy requires a truancy letter be sent after three absences.

After five absences, the student and a parent/guardian must meet with their Resource Specialist and the Director. After seven absences, the student is dismissed from the program.

  • What happens when I finish my high school diploma?

Upon completing the 25 credits for KCKPS, you are no longer part of the Gateway to College Program. You may remain at Donnelly College for an associate or bachelor’s degree, or transfer your earned college credits to another school. Your Resource Specialist will meet with you at the beginning of your final semester to help identify and set goals, along with connecting you to financial aid resources.

  • May I take summer classes?

Donnelly does offer summer classes, but you would be responsible for the full cost of tuition and books. Depending on the situation, you may be eligible to take summer school through KCKPS.
