There are numerous ways you can assist Donnelly students by volunteering your time and talent. Whether it be mentoring a student interested in your professional field or being a guest lecturer or tutor within a classroom, volunteering at Donnelly is a fantastic way to significantly impact our students’ lives.
We welcome volunteers’ various capacities, and have opportunities to suit those looking for a longer-term
commitment or those looking to donate just a few hours
a semester.

Current Volunteer Opportunities:
Math tutor
Description and impact: The Math tutor will assist in the Academic Center for Excellence helping students to improve their math skills.
Qualifications: Completion of at least 2 college-level math courses.
Estimated Time Commitment: Tutors would need to commit to one hour a week, or one hour every two weeks. Morning, afternoon, and evening positions are available Monday through Friday.

“Write Place” English tutor
Description and impact: The English tutor will assist in the “Write Place” helping students to improve their writing skills and reviewing their written work to help improve it before being turned in.
Qualifications: Completion of at least 2 college-level English courses.
Estimated Time Commitment: “Write Place” tutors would need to commit to one hour a week, or one hour every two weeks. Morning, afternoon, and evening positions are available Monday through Friday.

Science tutor
Description and impact: The Science tutor will assist in the Academic Center for Excellence helping students to improve their biology and/or chemistry skills.
Qualifications: Completion of at least 2 college-level science courses.

Classroom Speaker / Discussion Leader - Preparatory English
Description and impact: This volunteer will speak to students in the Intensive Preparatory English classes at Donnelly College. The subject matter can be anything from current events, college experience (especially first-generation) or travel or career experiences. Speakers will help broaden the horizons for the students in the classes and the subject(s) discussed will be used as classroom assignments by the instructors during that week.
Estimated Time Commitment: Each speaker would need to commit to at least 1 one-hour class period, usually on Tuesday morning, 9:30-10:30 a.m. or Wednesday evening, 5:30-6:30 p.m. This could be a one-time appearance, or an on-going series of presentations.
Other Commitments: Each speaker would need to inform the program assistant of the discussion topic at least two weeks prior to the classroom presentation. This allows instructors time to develop follow-up activities.
Donnelly College Program: Preparatory Education

volunteer paraprofessional - donnelly college, lansing campus
Location: Lansing Correctional Facility
Description and impact: Paraprofessionals help the instructors when the classes are broadcast from one location to another within the Lansing Correctional Facility. Classes are offered at 3 locations within the prison simultaneously via teleconferencing. There is an instructor in one location and at least 2 volunteers are needed for each class to be the go-between, and to assist in assignment and test deliveries. In the classroom the volunteers help students with their questions and help to set up the technology. They would get to know the students and give them advice and suggestions on how to study and take notes for the class.
Qualifications: We are seeking those with a desire to help and make a difference.
Estimated Time Commitment: Volunteers will commit a minimum of one night a week currently (Monday through Friday 5-8 p.m.), with the possible need for assistance with day classes as the program expands.
Other Commitments: Lansing Volunteers must attend a three-hour orientation session annually.
